The Voicethread Assessment method described below continues to be used with some modifications which include limiting the Voicethread to assessment of just one SLO, SLO # 2 and a slight modification of the scoring rubric. As seen below:
182LS Oral Presentation Level Outcomes Rubric (draft)
Passing | |
topic and content | appropriate topic; basic but sufficient details |
organization of information | minimal use of cohesive elements may have some repetition and/or misuse of cohesive elements |
vocabulary | repetitive use of basic and content vocabulary with some word form but few word choice errors due to simplicity of topics |
grammar | grammatical errors occur throughout in complex structures; fewer in simple structures; occasionally impede comprehension |
comprehensibility (speed, tone, stress, pronunciation) | comprehensible throughout; may be too slow/fast, too quiet, and may have a few errors in stress and pronunciation of basic words |
Spring 2012
A final speaking task presentation is being developed for use at the end of spring 2012. The students will uses VoiceThread to record their presentation and share it with the L/S instructors. Once the assessment is completed a link will be provided to share the assessment tool itself.
A draft Voicethread (see VoiceThread link below) to assess ESL 182 SLO # 1 and # 3 is now being shared with the ESL Listening and Speaking faculty for review and comment. VoiceThread was chosen as a tool for this assessment because it would allow for either in-class or out-of-class assessment and can be easily copied for use by multiple students and multiple faculty for assessment of each student.
Faculty could complete the assessment review on their own, wherever they like. Additionally, the use of VoiceThread would enable the assessment of both SLO # 1(speaking skills) and SLO # 3 (listening skills) in one simple assessment. Voicethread is also already used in many of the ESL L/S classes, so it is a known tool for many of the students. For those who may not have used it before, it is a very intuitive application that can be mastered in minutes.
After the review process is complete, we will run a pilot assessment with this VoiceThread at the end of the spring 2012 semester.
ESL 182 LS SLO # 2
The student will produce sentences and chunks of discourse in speech of 200-250 words on assigned topics and/or topics of the student's own choosing.
ESL 182 LS SLO #3
Identify main ideas and isolate specific detail in listening passages appropriate for students at this level of English proficiency (Intermediate).
ESL 182 LS Voicethread Assessment
Assessment Spring 2012 Update
SLO number 2 was assessed through the use of a VoiceThread.
Students recorded comments in response to specific questions based on the same
topic as the listening passage used for assessment of SLO number 3. Students
were given directions to use their notes taken during SLO number 3 assessment,
and record spoken comments on the VoiceThread answering the given topic
questions.
SLO number 3 was assessed using an objective test given at
the end of the semester. The test consisted of multiple-choice, true/false, and
short answer type items. Each of the items demonstrated proficiency with main
ideas or details. Students listened to a passage at an intermediate English
proficiency level that they had never heard before. They were allowed to listen
to the passage up to 3 times. They then used the notes they took while
listening and answered the questions on the test.
